Artist

I am a young travelling artist, focussing mainly on nature and sky scenes. The images I make are aesthetic metaphors for human beings living in a broken yet redeemed world.

Exploring & Celebrating Nature

In exploring the landscape I aim to offer a heightened awareness of nature’s purity and energy. The mountains, trees, seas, earth and sky are enduring, yet vulnerable in their both unpredictable and timely seasons; still, yet always changing. They daily remind us of their witness to human history and honest reflection of our own joys and sorrows, life and death cycles.

Since I was a small child, I have felt an affinity with the land. To me, the earth itself has a voice that sings about, and contains within itself, an eternal wisdom which threads through the universe. And like the earth, it is solid, dependable and brings forth fruit. It is this wisdom that is a major underlying element throughout all of my works, which I seek to know personally, and touch upon in my work.

Inner Vibrancy

The contemplative, yet dynamic and spirited scenes I choose are painted in confident simplicity, “breaking down” the colours and “bringing out” what I see to be its inner vibrancy. I use pure colour with an emphasis on primary/secondary juxtaposition, and have a high natural interest in negative space. There is a pursuit in this way of painting to express a profound experience of being intensely alive yet extremely vulnerable.

There is also a sense of transcendence in these landscapes that suggests a crossing between other dimensions, existing in such powerful places in the human being, such as imagination, thought-realms, prayer, dreams and visions.

Life Patterns

Since I am a travelling artist, I question and am affected by the culture and nature of different countries. I draw parallels between, for example, the growth patterns of trees with the decisions we make and courses our lives take. The figure of the lone tree in a scene of severe weather can be compared to human solitude and endurance through life’s trials. I am happy that I have chosen to record my time of exploration in my twenties in this way.

Skies & Messages

The sky is one of the only universal spaces in the world, available to all people of every race, tongue, age, spirituality, level of intelligence and social status, onto which to look up to and project our thoughts and feelings. The sky therefore provides for an artist the perfect “canvas” for throwing thoughts up there to be pondered over by any person.
